End of January Offer....

Hello,

Hope you are having a good week.

The great news is...we've pretty much made it through January!
I don't know about you, but I find January the toughest month - it's all the dark gloomy weather, the short days, the hangover from all the Christmas over indulgence.

I want to celebrate getting through those weeks with a little offer over at my Folksy and Etsy shops, to coincide with the launch of my valentines and mother's day cards and prints for this year.

Mother's day in the UK is early this year - Sunday 6th March, so this offer is an opportunity to stock up on cards for both occasions for less.
For 20% Off at my Folksy and Etsy shops, simply type the following code in when checking out any orders made before end of Sunday 31st January:

JANUARY20OFF

Have a lovely weekend

Best wishes

Happy New Year!...

Happy New Year! Hello 2016

I hope it's a very happy, healthy and peaceful year for all!

All in all, 2015 was a productive, happy and enlightening year for me.
It was a year filled with interesting and inspiring opportunities to try new things, meet new people, step out of my comfort zone a bit more to learn and discover new skills...

It was a year where I went with the flow a little more and stressed a little less.
This approach worked well throughout the year and helped me get something off the ground that I have been dreaming of doing for ages...this was the year I launched my first collection of FABRICS over on Spoonflower (US based) and Print Me Pretty (UK based)

I've always enjoyed pattern making, but had felt like I had so much to learn before I could properly get a fabric range together.  This year I finally began to get to grips with it all...and yes, there is absolutely loads I need to learn, but I feel like this is just the beginning and I am really enjoying learning and discovering how to do it, what works and what doesn't.  This is definitely something I will be continuing to do this coming year, I'm loving it!...

Throughout 2015 I designed lots and lots of new greetings card designs for license to my friends at publishers Art Eco Designs and The Heart of a Garden.  They handle pretty much all of the wholesale of my greetings cards and gift wrap products as that's what they do best. They have a lovely big shiny warehouse in Redruth, Cornwall and a very friendly team of people to take care of wholesale orders...I, on the other hand, have a couple of cupboards in my house to store a small stock of cards, a trusty computer, a graphics tablet and a vivid imagination...so I work closely with them on designs as that's the bit I love doing most of all.  It's a beautiful thing, I hope to be doing lots more work with them again this year.

Last year I filled in lots of the gaps in my occasions card range.  I created designs for many milestone birthday cards for all ages.  The most challenging of these designs was a range of cards for men.  My natural style is very floral and feminine so it was a real step out of my comfort zone to come up with designs which would appeal to men.  However, I learnt that I am capable of creating designs for that market, which made me very proud and happy...

I also designed two new wholesale collections of greetings cards and have some new mug designs in the pipeline for The Heart of a Garden  for this year, which are ready to be launched later this month at the Giving and Living trade fair in Exeter from 17th to 20th January.

Giving and Living is a South West home and gift trade show aimed at the coast and tourism sector.  Lots of my designs will be found there on The Heart of a Garden's stand number B332...

One of the most exhilarating things I did last year, which also proved to be a revelation to me, is that I had the chance to be a guest speaker at a west country, Creative Women in Business meet up.
I'd not done any public speaking for at least nine years when my lovely friend Helen, who runs the creative women groups, asked me to come along and share some tips about online selling with this fantastic group of women.

I was very nervous, but oh my goodness I enjoyed my day there so much!
It made me realize how I need to get out more and meet up, face to face with other creative people.  Doing what I do is very solitary work.  I am lucky to have a wonderful group of creative friends I've met through social media and their support and company is utterly wonderful.  That said, chatting via a smart phone or computer is no substitute for being in the same room as other like minded humans.  It wasn't until I did the talk that I realized how much I needed to do this!  Getting out and meeting other creatives is definitely something I aim to do plenty more of in the coming year...

In the summer I rose to another challenge I was lucky to have the opportunity to take up.  I had been invited by my former secondary school to come in and run an 'Art Award' workshop with a group of students aged between 12-13.  This was a whole day of doing art together, with me leading the project for the day.  Although I was initially terrified at the idea of teaching (not something I naturally saw myself as), once I got there all those fears melted away and I had a really great day with some wonderful young adults.  I was blown away by their attitude to the work and their enthusiasm for art.  It reminded me of when I was at school discovering my passion for art and design. I have always felt at home in the art department!...

There were plenty of chances to get out and about and find inspiration last year and I seized every one I could.  In the spring I visited the Outlaw Fair in Bristol and met up with a few of the lovely creative women I had met at the talk I gave. In the summer I had a wonderful, sunny weekend in great company at the Contemporary Craft Festival in Bovey Tracey.

The highlight of all those days out had to be visiting Banky's Dismaland  in Weston Super Mare, with my husband and few of my very good friends.  It was utterly mind blowing to see so much great art close to where we live.  Nothing like that ever usually happens in our neck of the woods!  I did a blog post about it after our visit, you can catch up on that here if you fancy a virtual trip to Dismaland: http://artworkbyangie.blogspot.co.uk/2015/09/dismaland-mind-blowing-day-of.html

So it's back to business as usual with a whole new shiny year ahead.

Before I get properly stuck into 2016, I want to say some big heartfelt thank you's to those who supported me in 2015....

First and most importantly, thank you to my husband John, he's always there to lend a hand when needed and supports me in all I do.

Thank you to my friends at The Heart of a Garden, who've I been working with for a few years now and have always been great champions of my work. I look forward to lots more fun working with them all this year.

I'd also like to thank all my lovely design clients, it has been a pleasure to work with you all this past year and I look forward to continuing with projects and starting new ones this year.

Thank you to everyone who has ordered prints and products from me this past year, either from my online shops or from my stockist's shops.  I really appreciate every single purchase as it enables me to continue to do what I love most for my job.

Finally, thank you to everyone who has supported my social networking efforts, your feedback, likes and encouragement keep me going and spur me on - it is truly wonderful to feel part of a very supportive and inspiring online community.

THANK YOU!

Here's to a very happy new year for all!

Best wishes

5 Things I've Learnt to Celebrate my 5th Anniversary this Week!....

Hello,

This week is a special week for my little business.
It marks the 5th anniversary of me posting my very first blog post, which means it marks 5 years since the official launch date of Artwork By Angie.

In the beginning, Artwork By Angie was the name I hid behind, not fully confident to step forward in my own right as an illustrator.  As a name for my website and online shops, I’m still OK with the Artwork By Angie name, it describes what I do and what I’m essentially about i.e. creating artwork, specifically for print, mostly digital artwork.   Although a couple of years ago I finally began to feel comfortable saying ‘I am an illustrator and designer’ and actually believing it myself.  So slowly but surely I’ve been happily using my full name for a little while now -  which to me, is a big indicator of how much I have gained and grown since starting this blog.

The use of my full name may seem a small thing to many people, but to me, thinking back to where I was 5 years ago, I would not have felt comfortable with it at all.  At that time I was being brave and ‘having a go’ just starting a blog and a website.  It all took a huge leap of faith for which I had set a deadline in my head of about 12 months.  If no green shoots had appeared by the end of 12 months, I was prepared to go back to the world of employment.   I couldn’t really see beyond the end of each week and each new blog post.  Back then it was a case of building up my portfolio, so really I was working from one ‘Illustration Friday’ submission on my blog to the next to gain some new work in that way....

The turning point came with the launch of my facebook page and Folksy shop a few months later.  Slowly but surely, it all gathered momentum and I have not looked back since.  It’s been an amazing journey so far – with highs and lows and opportunities to work on some amazing things with some wonderful people, both globally and locally.  I’ve made true friends and genuinely feel part of a great, wide community of creative souls – all of which make me feel very excited to set to work every day.

To celebrate my 5th year, I’d like to share 5 key things I’ve learnt along the way that are serving me well now.  These are mostly stuff I wish I’d known from the start.  I hope that these 5 things may help others achieve their dreams too:

1.       Value Your Time – you ARE worth it, regardless of how much of an ‘imposter’ you may feel.  Your time is very precious and finite!  If you are not covering it well in your prices, or are missing out on important moments in your family and friends lives because you are struggling to make things work/or are running out of time to do things, then you need to stop and re-evaluate everything.  Your business needs to serve you...

Set business hours, take breaks, work out your budget and cover it with your pricing.  Be brave and say NO to things that don’t serve you well – they could be the things that bring you crashing down....and I know this, because I’ve been there and turned it around...and that is why I made this my number 1 tip!

2.       The Price Needs to be Right – it’s not just your time that you need to cover.  In the beginning you may not realise how much your business is a hungry beast which has lots of costs in it’s day-to-day running.  The more you grow, the more those costs grow with you.  Be honest with yourself about those costs, look at everything, all the fees, postage, printer ink (over a year printer ink is an absolute shocker!!). When pricing your products and services, make an allowance for all of that.  Shop around, get the best deal, don’t be too seduced into purchasing things your business doesn’t really need.   At the same time, don’t be afraid to make wise investments that serve you well in the long run (eg.  the right piece of kit, or an accountant to look over your books and free you up from stress,  or a decent camera / photographer to shoot some press worthy images).  Creative businesses are still businesses and need to think profitably if they want to stay trading – I’m just saying, keep a close eye on the figures.

3.       Your Customers are Everything – always place them at the heart of what you do and create.  Get to know them well, listen to their feedback and create with them in mind.  I’ve often found those who are attracted to my work, tend to be very like minded, which is a very beautiful  & exciting thing!  Some of my favourite designs have come about because of something a customer has fed back to me and has inspired me.  Which is why I try and give something back for such loyalty, by ensuring subscribers to my newsletter frequently receive exclusive offers ...and I will be sending out another newsletter offer later this week.

4.       Don’t be shy, be a social butterfly...
Social media works, so get your work out there to be seen, build your network and ensure you spread yourself around a bit so you don’t depend on one app....

BUT, have a PLAN, don’t SPAM!
Think quality over quantity if you want to convert 'likes' into sales – as that’s what seems to work best for me.  By getting to know my followers, listening to their comments and feedback and using my site stats, I’ve been able to tailor things to try and deliver what they want, in a way they want to see it.  In return I’ve noticed a steady flow of orders from returning customers, which fills me with joy as that must mean I’ve finally found my tribe!

In my experience, ‘like ladders’ and ‘share for share’ strategies really are a complete and total waste of time.  I did a little bit of this very early on when I began my facebook page.  It got me a tiny bit of interest but not enough to justify the time and energy spent on it.  If having lots of likes is that important to you, you may as well open your wallet and buy a pile of equally disinterested ‘likes’ from any company you find on Google and then go and put the kettle on and do something more worthwhile with your day!

Better still, save yourself the money and time and keep it real, as that will help you find your people and in turn they will help you grow your business.

Also, there’s a big wide world out there, it’s important to get out and about.  Try and take part in events and visit fairs to meet up with people.  Or get involved locally, work with local businesses, collaborate with others and generally build a support network with other business owners –my goodness, you’ll need it and so will they!

5.       Love what you do!
If you don’t wake up feeling the love and passion for what you’re doing, then surely you are doing the wrong thing.  We mustn’t let fear become an obstacle, because without wanting to sound bleak, the harsh truth is, we are all heading to the same destination!... and as one of my favourite songs says ‘Enjoy yourself whilst you’re still in the pink!’

So with that in mind, if you have a dream - chase it, you’ll find a way to make it work.  If your dream no longer serves you - change it, search your soul for what it is that makes your heart sing and make that something you do for at least for a few moments every day.

I certainly don’t have all the answers - I only have my own experiences.
I am happy to share some of what those experiences have taught me, in the hope it will resonate and help other creative people move onwards and upwards.  The world is a far richer place when creative people are found creating and loving what they create!

Finally, I’d like to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has followed me on this 5 year journey so far.  Especially to those of you who have ordered and commissioned, designs, prints, cards, wrap and everything else from me, I am so very grateful to you all as you are helping me live my dream!...

To properly celebrate my 5th anniversary, I will be launching a giveaway later this week (I just need to decide what I am 'giving away'), so please keep an eye out for that!

With very best wishes

New Work, New Cards, New Stockists....

Hello!

This week looks set to be a lovely week of sunshine here in Somerset.  Such a bright outlook seems very fitting as I have lots of different types of work on the go at the moment which is making me feel very productive and energized.  I really love spring and summer, those are definitely 'my' seasons.  For me it is also always the best time to develop new designs as the colours in my garden spill over into the colours in my work .

Talking of new work, I have lots of new things to share with you today.

Firstly, I've just sent off the last artwork for a new mini range of greetings cards called 'Happily Ever After' which will hopefully be available for both wholesale and retail soon.

The illustrations here are the last two designs I did from that range (facebook and instagram followers will have seen little peeps of these in development)....

If you'd like a first look at this range all together - I've uploaded the designs in my online portfolio here: http://www.artworkbyangie.com/happily-ever-after-collection.html

As usual, trade customers will be able to order these through my publisher, Art Eco Designs as soon as they are ready (which should be within the next few weeks)...

A couple of weeks ago I received a large stock of my new occasions cards - mainly milestone age cards.  These are gradually finding their way as listings on my website, Folksy and Etsy shops.  So in between designing cards, I've been listing lots of them to my sites.  It's all because I am on a mission to try and offer a design for most occasions and have plans to add more designs to this occasions range later in the year...

Meanwhile, I am about to start on another new range of cards - which I am very excited about and look forward to sharing progress on it very soon.

Finally, before I get back to my drawing, I want to share a couple of new stockists I am delighted to introduce to you.

Hatty Boots are a lovely online card boutique based near me in Somerset. They have a very extensive range of high quality greeting cards all sourced from UK designers and publishers.

The second stockist to share with you today is one a very good friend of mine stumbled upon recently.  Leckford Estate Farm Shop is a wonderful, Waitrose owned shop on the Leckford Estate  & Longstock  Park Nursery in Stockbridge, Hampshire.  They stock all manner of gorgeous local and regional produce in their shop and it was my 'Bloomin' Lovely' range of cards that were spotted in there.  Needless to say, this morning I've had a very long look on their website and really fancy a day out there soon - it's looks fantastic!:

Have a lovely day!
Best wishes

New Designs Revealed - Birthday Age Cards for Young Men

Today is the last day of my new designs revealed.  Well, for now anyway as I am currently working on lots of other new things.

These are designs for young men aged 16, 18 and 21.

These were a big challenge for me.  I have two daughters, many nieces, but only one nephew.  So my world is very pink and I had to dig deep for these designs!

However, sometimes the most challenging things can be the most fulfilling and I'm glad I had a chance to develop these to see what I'm capable of when I try!

These designs and all the other designs I have shared with you this week are available for wholesale orders now from publishers Art Eco Designs.  I'm due to get a stock of them all in the next few weeks and will be gradually listing them to my online shops when they arrive.

Have a lovely day!

New Designs Revealed - Birthday Age Cards for Young Women

Hello!

Today's new designs reveal is all about youth as I share with you my brand new designs for female birthday cards for 16, 18 and 21

These were a chance for me to have fun with vibrant colours and revisit my college days.
To put me in the mood whilst I worked on them, I listened to....and occasionally sang along with (Oh my poor neighbours!) some great tunes from those days and I hope that the joy I was feeling comes through in these designs.

Tomorrow I'll be back with the last of these new age cards to reveal - the ones for the younger men.

Have a lovely day!

New Designs Revealed - Birthday Age Cards for Men

It feels like Happy Hour on my blog today as I showcase my new age cards for 30 plus men.

I found creating these designs a very refreshing change from my usual style and I had some fun developing them.  It's always good to stretch yourself creatively and do something that is not the most comfortable thing initially. Usually from doing that, it's where I find the most creative satisfaction and joy!

Have a lovely day and I'll be back tomorrow to reveal more new designs for
younger women aged 16 to 21

Best Wishes
